THE GREEKS IN THE NATIONAL UPRISING OF 1821: Warriors For Freedom From Diverse Regions of the Greek World
Dimitrios T Karamitsos
Description
This book is the cumulative effort of the monthly online lectures sponsored by the International Hellenic Association (IHA) during 2021, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821. This revolution was the result of lighting the fuse for freedom transmitted by Rigas Feraios and methodically was prepared by The Society of Friends.
Numerous articles and books have been written about the national uprising of 1821, but most mainly focused on the events in the Peloponnese and Central Greece, as well as the great struggle of the Greek islanders. However, at that time almost all the areas of the Ottoman Empire inhabited by Greeks revolted and this event is presented in this book. Therefore, we included the participation in the revolution of many other areas of Hellenism in the Balkan peninsula except the well-known warriors of Peloponnese, middle Greece, and the Greek islands.
Exceptionally the participation of the people of Missolonghi was included due to their significant contribution to the transformation of European public opinion in support of the Greeks. The last chapter of the book refers to the illustrious Greek who organized the new Greek state, the unique Ioannis Kapodistrias.
The Greek Revolution of 1821 was an ethnocultural conflict, not one based on class. They was wide participation of all social classes, even the prominent ones and the ecclesiastical hierarchy (despite some of their initial reservations). Additionally, the financing of the revolution was done mainly by wealthy Greeks.
This sponsored collection of essays of IHA (based on lectures) presents the broad participation of Greek people in the revolution of 1821. Warriors for freedom from diverse regions of the Greek world were presented in this book of 324 pages, with many illustrations.
