Kostas Faltaits
Author
Kostas Faltaits (1891–1944) was a distinguished Greek journalist and descendant of the historic Faltaits family with roots predating Byzantium. Born in Smyrna and raised on Skyros, he studied Law and Philology at the University of Athens but turned to journalism in 1910.
As a war correspondent for Embros, he covered the Asia Minor campaign in 1921, reporting on the Hellenic Army’s movements and documenting first-hand testimonies of massacres against Christian populations in Bithynia. Wounded in an air raid that same year, he later compiled these accounts in These are the Turks: Narratives from the Massacres at Nicomedia (1921), later translated into French and used by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2016, an English edition translated by Eleni Phufas- Jousma and Aris Tsilfidis appeared under the title The Genocide of the Greeks in Turkey: Survivor Testimonies from the Nicomedia (Izmit) Massacres of 1920–1921, with a prologue by Tessa Hofmann.
